Every show of force reduces your power

People speak less in meetings you’re in

People start taking less responsibility

People go slower and become less effective

Each time you pull rank or give instructions you reduce trust and sense of autonomy causing an increase in stress through the organisation.

You only have to tell your kids what to do to witness this in action without any vale of agreement.

For every bit of chaos and stress spread by the instruction method the EXTRACTION method spreads the opposite.

Staff creating their own solutions.

Not just taking responsibility but gathering up as much as they can.

Stress goes down as the sense of both freedom and being truly valued for their ideas and skill goes up.

It’s not even hard to create.

All that is required is to switch from “I know how I want it done and I don’t have time to not instruct”…

Into curiosity where you ask how they want to do it because you know that it is so much more effective that you don’t have time to not do it.

What’s required is refusing to give instructions and instead asking,

How will you do it?

What needs to happen to have done it by x?

What do you need to know and where will you learn it?

What skills are required that you don’t have and how will you learn them?

What resources do you need?

How can I help you?

You cannot transfer clarity from your head to someone else’s. You have to help them to construct their own clarity.
